How to design a bespoke engagement ring
You’re probably familiar with the four Cs of diamond rings; cut, clarity, carat and colour.
But there’s another C you should really be considering- custom.
Perhaps you’ve had your ideal ring designed in your head for years. Or you might have a whole Pinterest board with lots of different styles you love. Or maybe you haven’t got a clue what you want, except that it should be unique. Choosing a custom engagement ring means you’ll have a ring like no other. It will have all the elements that you love and the best part is the process is nowhere near as daunting- or costly- as you might expect.
Bespoke Diamonds is tucked away on Dublin’s Kildare Street, just across from Dáil Éireann. The beautiful showroom is an absolute treasure trove of engagement rings, with more than 500 styles on offer.
As well as the hundreds of dazzlers on display Bespoke specialises in creating one-of-a-kind, custom engagement rings. Often we assume going custom means a higher price, but this is not the case at Bespoke where they do all their work in-house.
“The traditional way of viewing engagement rings was looking in jewellers’ windows and trying on a number of rings,” says Martin Commins, founder of Bespoke Diamonds. “The goal was to try and find something similar to the image you had in mind; this usually resulted in finding a ring that was similar, but not perfect.”
The perfect ring is exactly what you’ll get with a custom design. The designer at Bespoke Diamonds has over 30 years' experience designing specialty rings and his team will guide you through the whole process, working with you to conceive that dream dazzler.
To begin with, they’ll talk you through the hundreds of rings on display to get an idea of the type of style, colour and cut you prefer. This hands-on start is a great way to get an in-depth understanding of which style suits you. And of course, trying on dozens of sparklers is a pretty nice way to spend the time.
The showroom also houses hundreds of loose diamonds so you can choose the perfect stone. They work with leading diamond brokers and dealers who provide stones of exceptional quality. Bespoke Diamonds source all of their materials directly from suppliers, a cost effective method that allows them to provide the best quality for the best price.
If you don’t see a ring that you love, they will help you gauge the style you think you might like to go for- it might be a solitaire, three stone or halo- and from there you’ll choose the other design elements.
This is where it starts to get detailed, but a dedicated specialist will be on-hand throughout the entire process. They afford each and every couple the utmost attention, a level of service that has garnered Bespoke five-star reviews from customers and multiple industry awards.
Once all your details have been chosen, the team will then create a 3D image of your ring using CAD technology. You’ll be able to see exactly what your finished ring will look like and how all the chosen elements work together. If it needs some tweaking, your design will be reworked until you are completely happy with the final product.
Then, the exciting part; the team get to work in their Dublin studio and handcraft your ring. The CAD drawing is sent through a 3D printer and a wax model is produced. This is sent to castings where it is recreated in the metal you have chosen and is then sent off to Dublin Castle- yes, that’s right, Dublin Castle. Inside those hallowed halls you’ll find the Assay Office where the ring will be hallmarked before it is sent back to Bespoke.
Their in-house goldsmith then gets to work polishing the band and prepares it for the diamond setting. The diamond setter works by hand, intricately fixing the precious stones in place. The ring is then ready for a final polish and the centre diamond is set. And voila! Your beautiful, one-of-a-kind ring is ready to settle onto your finger.
