Suited and booted

The essential style guide for grooms, brought to you by Benetti Menswear

While bridal fashion isn’t often overly influenced by trends, the rise of mix and match bridesmaid dressing has been impossible to ignore. Rather than choosing just one dress, brides are increasingly opting for a mix of dresses, gowns, skirts and tops in tonal colours and fabrics for a cohesive, stylish bridal party. Not only does it look incredibly chic, but mixing and matching allows each person to wear a style that suits their shape. Now, menswear designers are quite literally following suit.

“A mix and match collection offers a wide variety of styles, sizes and two options in fit- both Tapered and Comfort,” says Vincent Nally, from Irish menswear label Benetti Menswear.

“Benetti’s new season collection offers the same contemporary look for both classic and slim fit options. A great suit doesn't look so great if it doesn't fit. Short, regular and long, the range caters for all shapes and sizes.”

When it comes to finding the perfect suit for the groom and groomsmen, it’s no longer a case of one cut fits all. Unless you go completely bespoke, finding a suit that fits all groomsmen perfectly is going to be near on impossible, which is why mix and match collections are the perfect solution for weddings.

Formal menswear is, for the most part, rooted in classic tailoring techniques, simple silhouettes and understated colour palettes. It certainly isn’t privy to the same dramatic trends as womenswear, but in recent years formal menswear has become decidedly more daring.

Designers are incorporating ready-to-wear trends, such as cropped trousers, bright colour palettes and jaunty prints into suiting, while slim-fit suits are just as common as formal morning suits.

“Wedding suits have come a long way from the traditional tails grooms opted for over the years. Formal menswear now has so much more choice when it comes to cut, silhouette and fabric,” Vincent comments.

“Suiting takes its cue from seasonal colourway and cuts, and so too, should grooms when it comes to buying a wedding suit. Grooms should shop in the right season as trends, styles and colours will continually change. Spring/Summer collections may not suit a winter wedding and vice versa.”

Grooms marrying in the summer months can opt for more lightweight textiles such as linen, wool blends, silk and seersucker. Spring Summer palettes range from cool neutrals, like beige and oatmeal, to light grey, pale blue and even a soft purple. Winter calls for heavier fabrics and rich colourways. Think deep burgundy, navy, inky black and deep grey in herringbones, checks or pinstripes.

As well as the season, grooms will also need to keep their dress code in mind when it comes to choosing the right suit. A relaxed, casual garden party calls for a classic suit, perhaps sans tie, accessorised with an elegant silk scarf.

Depending on the formality, grooms could opt for tailored trousers and blazer in a light check or fine pinstripe. A single flower bud in the button hole adds a welcome splash of colour that also complements the bride’s bouquet, or else a brightly patterned pocket square adds a touch of colour to the ensemble.

If you are going all out with a black tie affair then there really is only one option- a classic tux. According to Vincent, “You may not wear one every day, but when only the utmost formality will do, there is simply no substitute for a tuxedo.”

“A black tie dress code doesn't strictly mean black, as some of the best-dressed gents on the red carpet have shown us. The new Cusack shawl collar tuxedo from Benetti Menswear is a typical example, a popular choice in sharp tailoring with signature details including the satin collar and lapel.”

While the suit is the main event, accessories shouldn’t be an afterthought. When it comes to mastering the mix and match style, accessories are the ideal way to inject colour and pattern into your bridal party style, without everyone looking exactly the same.

“No outfit is complete without the finishing touches. Adding a point of difference to your formal attire with a statement tie and matching pocket square is essential,” says Vincent.

“A flash of a pocket square is the quickest way to spruce up a suit jacket for the big day. Even though they only peek out beneath your trousers, patterned socks can add the finishing touch to your suiting.”

Waistcoats, too, can elevate your suiting. The three-piece is a classic style that’s enjoyed a resurgence in recent years and waistcoats have come to take centre stage. While some prefer to keep things classic with three matching pieces, the more dapper among us have embraced the contrast waistcoat with gusto.

“Contrast waistcoats are hugely popular this season as grooms embrace a more fashion forward look. As men are increasingly looking for stylish updates on classic pieces, we’ve seen the introduction of the double breasted waistcoat, a look becoming most prominent for Spring Summer '18.”

Modern wedding style is about creating a cohesive ensemble from head to toe, so footwear is equally as important. The right shoes are imperative when it comes to having a perfectly fitted suit, as the leg length and cuff will be tailored to accommodate footwear.

No matter what cut, colour or accessories they opt for, grooms should choose a suit that makes them feel great. After all, nothing looks as good as someone who feels confident in what they are wearing.

“Long gone is the option of just choosing a grey or black suit for the big day. Stylish grooms are now having a lot more fun with their wedding wear, making sure they make their mark on the all-important day.”
