Jessica Simpson reveals children got standing ovation at wedding...with 12 bridesmaids

Jessica Simpson’s children got a standing ovation at her wedding.

The 33-year-old star and former American footballer Eric Johnson tied the knot on July 5 in California. They are parents to two-year-old Maxwell and Ace, 12 months, and having their kids with them made the day even more special.

“It's all about family for us," Jessica told People magazine in its cover story.

“Before I walked out, I kept hearing all the applause, so my kids got standing ovations!"

The couple wanted all their family involved in the big day, which has been some time coming as they have been engaged since November 2010. Jessica’s mother Tina and singer sister Ashlee were maids of honour, while Eric’s dad Stephen took best man duties.

Ashlee’s fiancé Evan Ross also had a special role, as he was one of the 11 groomsmen. Not to be outdone by her new husband, Jessica selected 12 bridesmaids to help her on her big day.

The singer-and-actress’ father Joe officiated the ceremony, which was nondenominational – although the couple chose to repeat the usual vows to each other.

The nuptials took place at the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California, with 275 of the couple’s friends and family invited to share the day. All of them fell silent when Jessica walked in, wearing a strapless champagne and gold gown with tulle layers, which was designed by Carolina Herrera.

“I saw my gorgeous wife coming towards me and she was crying,” Eric recalled. “I think my heart was exploding a little.”

Jessica added: “It's so surreal. This has been something we've wanted ever since we met.”

The happy couple had planned to get married a long time ago, but the arrival of their little ones meant they needed to change their plans. Last year Jessica freely admitted she had thought she’d be a wife before she became a mother.

“We've had two different wedding dates, but he keeps knocking me up," she laughed on The Tonight Show. "We're doing it very backwards, I know... I'll just keep my legs crossed, I guess, this time.”

Host Jay Leno took the opportunity to ask Jessica if she had planned to get pregnant so soon after the arrival of her first child.

"Apparently it was a part of God's plan for my life," she smiled. "I was extremely shocked... because I was going through a lot of hormonal changes, trying to get back to the old, vibrant Jessica. You know, it was kind of like a one-night stand. And it happened, all over again!"
