Two years after they met, Mathew proposed to a surprised Elaine on a cosy evening at home, and not long afterwards they found out they were expecting their baby boy Samuel.
The couple had originally booked their wedding in Santorini, Greece, for October, but when they discovered Mathew's father was suffering from a terminal illness they cancelled their plans. Elaine says, "When we got the news that Mathew's dad didn't have long left we decided to go ahead quickly here. We organised the whole thing in two weeks. We went to court and got an exemption, ordered flowers and booked the venue in one day!"
The pair got married at Bray registry office and, as they both loved the Shelbourne hotel, they couldn't think of anywhere more special in Ireland to enjoy their intimate reception with close family.
"We booked the Constitution suite which was the perfect size. Both our families are really into history so we had someone come and give a history talk about the room, which was amazing."
The bride had her mother's wedding dress re-designed to wear on the day.
"My mum and dad were married 33 years and I lost my dad just under a year ago, so that was super special to me," says Elaine.
As it was a small wedding Elaine and Mathew had gifts made for the guests, with personalised moleskin notebooks and hair gel from Sam's Barbers for the guys and tote bags for the girls.
Elaine says their best memory of the day was "having Mathew's dad there with us and he was so well on the day, that just made it for us! The whole day was filled with so much love we couldn't have asked for a better day."
