They dated for exactly four years before Francis popped the question on a sunny summer evening while walking on their favourite beach in Enniscrone, Co Sligo. "I bent down to take off my shoes and when I looked up he was on his knee with my grandmother's engagement ring. It was wonderful," says Fidelma.
Before the ceremony at their local church in Crossna, Fidelma made a short speech to welcome guests and invite them to tea and scones before travelling to the Ocean Sands Hotel in Enniscrone for a reception. The couple decided that with a non-traditional wedding party of four bridesmaids and three groomsmen, they would let the bridesmaids choose their own dresses - each in a colour that would suit their personality. "I did not see all the bridesmaids in their dresses together until the morning of the wedding, so you have to be able to go with the flow."
Fidelma and Francis also decided that they would have both their mothers walk up the aisle just behind Fidelma and her father.
"We decided to have the two mothers walk up with dad and myself as I was not into the idea of him giving me away. For us it was more that the two families were coming together and the wedding was a celebration for us all."
