Real Irish Weddings: Gillian and Cyril's rustic romance in Kildare

Gillian, from Maynooth and Cyril, from Lucan, originally met years before their first date, when Gillian was working in Cyril's office for the summer.

Cyril surprised Gillian with his proposal while they took a walk near Carton House. On one of their regular walking routes there, Gillian was admiring the winter sun only to realise Cyril was down on one knee with a different kind of sparkler in his hand.

The delighted pair then carried on to the hotel where Cyril had arranged for their parents to meet them.

After falling in love with The Village at Lyons, in Kildare, while there for a family meal, they knew there was nowhere else they'd prefer to be wed. The avid GAA fans decided on a personalised ceremony and used ribbons in the colours of their home counties to tie-the-knot with hand-fasting.

The bride found her dream dress online and from there she tracked down the name of the designer, Catherine Deane. Luckily, when Gillian arrived at Kalu in Naas, the only Irish stockist at the time, there was only one Lita gown in stock and it just so happened to be her size.

With the help of family, this couple handmade most of their decor and only decided they would have a cake at the last minute which they had made by Gillian's talented aunt Emily within two weeks of the big day.

After their special day, Gillian and Cyril enjoyed a week-long honeymoon in beautiful Paris.
