The newlywed revealed his unique idea on how he asked his husband to marry him.
The 57-year-old told Jonathan Ross how the engagement all came about, saying that the pair were at a meal at a restaurant in London when he decided to pop the question – using a fork to 'reveal' the ring.
"I bought a ring, and waited for him to pop off to the loo and put the ring on the prongs of a fork, so that he would see it as he started to eat. I thought it would be charming," he said, adding that he became nervous when Spencer didn’t immediately notice the ring.
"Of course, he came back and he started chatting and he started playing with the fork and I thought, ‘For God’s sake, look at the fork!’"
"And then I thought: ‘He's going to pick it up and the ring is going to fly off into that lady's soup…' But fortunately he just in time caught sight of it and it was a very teary and splendid moment," he said.
"I thought he would say yes," Fry admitted, and joked that he "didn’t mind" the age-gap between them. "I keep forgetting about it," he said.

Fry also revealed that he knew Spencer was ‘The One,’ from the very first moment he met him.
"I knew pretty much straight away that this was someone I wanted to spend, what I considered, the rest of my life with," he added. "Whether he thought the same because he's got rather a lot more [life to go]."
It’s safe to say that Spencer feels just as Fry does, as the happy couple were photographed grinning from ear-to-ear following their low-key wedding ceremony last month.
He has said that he is "dizzily happy” in his new marriage, but put rest to the rumours that the pair were planning to start a family.
Asked on Twitter whether he had "baby plans", he replied: "No, don't believe what you read in the papers!"
Fry will present the BAFTAs tomorrow night.
