You're not the only one!
While it's tradition for a couple to present a bouquet as a gift to the mother of the bride - and groom during the speeches at a wedding, many brides and grooms are now looking for alternative and unique ways to show their appreciation for their wonderful parents on their big day (and more on the fathers later!)
And while of course it's not at all necessary to go overboard with gift giving on the day (and sometimes, you have to admit, it does get a little out of hand) for those who want to give something 'a little extra' to say thanks to the mother of the bride and groom (or step mothers!) there are plenty of options out there.
We've rounded up some of our favourites below!
Gift ideas for the mother of the bride / groom
1. A pretty hanger for their wedding outfit
These hangers (stampitout €20.17, Etsy.com) would make a gorgeous gift to surprise the mother of the bride or groom with on the morning or night before the big day, and make a lovely keepsake for after.
2. A sweet embroidered napkin
This gorgeous personalised keepsake is guaranteed not to leave a dry eye in the house. (£35, notonthehighstreet.com)
3. A fabulous food hamper
If your mother in law considers herself a bit of a foodie, a fabulous food hamper is a great gift idea. Get it complete from Dollard & Co. (Dollard & Co. Signature Hamper, €180.00), or have their favourite food store put something special together with their favourite foods. You could easily put together a fun DIY food hamper too, with your mom's favorite biscuits, tea brand and tipple in there -throw in a few funny bits with little notes as explanations as to why you chose them, and you have yourself a very cute present indeed.
4. A beautiful piece of jewellery
You can never go wrong with a beautiful piece of jewellery for mum, but a piece would be especially perfect if it matched their dress for the big day. A lovely idea is to get them the same piece you'll be wearing on the day too, which is easily done with the many beautiful bridal jewellery collections currently on the market. Paul Costelloe, for example, has some wonderfully elegant necklaces and earrings in their new bridal collection, with pieces starting from €75.00 (above Sterling Silver necklace, €180, Fresh water pearl stud, €80, Paul Costelloe).
5. Their favourite scent
Pick up your mum's perfect perfume for her to start fresh on the big day, or alternatively if you're confident, why not opt for a new fragrance you think she'll love - scent memories are especially powerful, and if she wears it on the big day, she'll always be brought back to the feelings she had on your wedding day when she smells the new fragrance in the future. (Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Eau de Parfum Spray 35ml € 68.00, Debenhams)
6. A perfect wedding day print
An ideal keepsake to pop on the mantel. Have it personalised for your big day at notonthehighstreet.
7. A hair / beauty voucher / hamper
If your mom is anything like 90% of Irish mammies out there, she likes to take care of her hair, so a hair voucher will go down a treat for any time of the year. Peter Marks' vouchers can be used in Peter Marks salons all around Ireland (and on in-salon products such as the brilliant range of Pureology products), which makes them a good option (they even have e-gift cards that can be purchased online if you've left it a bit last minute!) or if your mother has a personal stylist she goes to, why not contact them and DIY a fun voucher to pop into a card to give with flowers?!
8. Tickets to a show or gig - or a special cinema visit
A pair of tickets to a show or even a cinema night is a great idea for a thank you gift, especially when you plan to go and spend time together. Have a night after the wedding where you get out of the house together and go for dinner and a movie, and make a memory with your mom. The Stella Theatre in Dublin often screens a host of classic movies as well as modern musicals like Mamma Mia and The Greatest Showman, and is a great option for a stylish and fun night out - with cocktails and nibbles - with the mum. She'll love it.
9. A cute tote bag
Because mothers just can't have enough tote bags. ('Mother Of The Bride' Tote Bag by Alphabet Bags £15 notonthehighstreet.com)
10. Restaurant / Spa vouchers
Who doesn't love a spa day?! Absolutely spoil your mum (or mums) with a trip to the spa for some treatments for you both (!) to unwind after the big day. The new Spa at Castleknock Hotel, which offers a range of indulgent Elemis and Voya treatments, is a fabulous option for those looking for bit of luxury in Dublin. Treat your mom to a voucher for a massage of facial before having her nails done in the spa's salon, before you both continue to relax with a cocktail and fabulous three course dinner in the hotel's elegant Earth and Fire restaurant. An evening very well spent.
