However she has now claimed that the bride, who happens to be her sister, wanted the proposal to happen so the whole family could witness the special moment at the ceremony which was held in California.

“My fiancé told her he didn't want to ruin their day and she insisted it would only make it better,” the woman named Megan told the New York Daily News.

“The groom of the wedding actually held my engagement ring the entire trip. Everyone in the Reddit picture knew the proposal was going to happen except for me.”

The picture attracted scathing comments when it was posted on Monday on Reddit with the headline "Any girl's wedding nightmare".

"It was sad to see," Megan said of the hurtful comments. “I guess if I didn't know the whole story, then I would feel the same way as some of them; however, I wouldn't voice my opinion about it because it's none of my business.”

“I just want everyone to know the story behind the picture,” she added.

Megan was the maid of honor at the wedding and her partner was the best man.

The two couples began dating when Megan was a teenager and have grown “incredibly close” over the years, she told the Daily News.

When they get married Megan hopes to have her sister and brother-in-law serve as matron of honor and best man.
